"The site is viewable in mobile devices … loads quickly due to the small sized html pages … many of the visitors come from Africa and use low bandwidth mobile devices to access the site."

Pro Bono Project work for Nonprofit Give Back Global

Challenge

This pro bono project involved a global nonprofit.  Because the client’s website was Flash based, it could not be properly searched by search engines, it could not be used optimally with website analytics and it was not viewable on mobile devices.  The client also wanted to periodically update the site with relevant information.

Solution

The Flash website was changed to an Html, CSS, and JavaScript based website.  Using Html, CSS and JavaScript on a website can give it all the capabilities that a Flash website has, without sacrificing on major search and analytics benefits.

The new site improved the ability of search engine robots to fully index the site and allowed Google Analytics to be able to monitor all of the website.

The new site was now also viewable in mobile devices.

Additionally, to give the client the ability to update the site periodically with relevant information, a Blogger blog was integrated into the website seamlessly.  Using the CSS customization abilities of Blogger, I made the blog look like the original site.  The blog is located on the Blogger site, and is linked to the client’s site, which is based on a Go Daddy webserver.  It seems that both the site and the blog are one.

Results

The added Blogger capabilities improved the client’s capacity to inform visitors.  Better visibility for search engines and a better ability to track visitors’ behavior helped to bring more visitors and to improve visitor understanding respectively.

The client felt that he improved his understanding of visitors and that it was easier for visitors to find the website.

Lastly, the site is viewable in mobile devices and it loads quickly due to the small sized html pages.  This is important, because many of the visitors come from Africa and use low bandwidth mobile devices to access the site.
