Project Portfolio:
  Human Computer Interface Project

Challenge

The challenge in this project was to develop a prototype interface for an application using Human Computer Interface (HCI) principles and practices and to test the application prototype interface on users.  I developed a prototype interface for an application that assisted senior citizens, or anyone that has a hard time using computers, on how to use the computer.  This project was done for an HCI class, developed by Stanford University, which is offered in Coursera, an online education site.

Solution

The project required that you use your experience to come up with the design.  I have been training senior citizens on computer use and chose to use this experience to come up with a design.  The design was for an interface for an application that would assist senior citizens to navigate the use of computers.

My experience in teaching computers taught me where people with problems learning/using computers usually encounter issues.  For example, I have found these user types find it challenging to determine if the PC is really busy or to tell whether or not the PC is connected to the internet.

Using software to create wireframe mockups, both a desktop and a mobile version of the application interface prototype were created.  Some of the HCI practices and principles used to design the interface and used in the project were:

  • Use of storyboards to show problems and how the application may solve them.
  • Rapid prototyping for iteration using wireframe software.
  • HCI design best practices (ex: show system status, consistency, familiar metaphors, recognition over recall, etc.).
  • Implementation plan definition and prioritization.
  • HCI framework evaluation plan that includes proper user testing procedures and protocols.

Results

The results of the project where positive based on testing on target users.  Several senior citizens where tested on the use of the prototype.  These users where not expert computer users.  They commented that the prototype application interface design might be able to help them use the computer more easily.  They mentioned that the actual prototype was easy to understand and had functionality that address their needs.
