Challenge

The client was a fine art black and white photographer who already had a website illustrating her work but wanted a new one.  The principal role of the new site was to display all her major photographic works to attract interests for exhibitions, projects and purchase.  The new website was to improve the way the work was displayed and the way the website allowed for more interactivity with visitors.  The website had to communicate and express it was a site for enthusiast of the art form; commercial aspects where to remain secondary although they were also a consideration.

Solution

The principal idea for the site was to let the work speak for itself.  The sites tries to bring the work to the front by being as simple and unobtrusive as possible. It is like the photo is inside a frame; the frame is the site.  The color (grey) itself was chosen because it is the best background color to see black and white photographs. The album that holds the photos is kind of minimal in the same way so it is out of the way.  The photos are relatively large so people that like B & W photos can happily enjoy them while exploring her portfolio.

We clearly communicated what kind of work this website offers to attract the people that would be interested in this style of photographic work.

To improve communication with her clients we linked a blog and it's feed to the site in addition to adding a guestbook.  Visitors can comment on specific blog updates in the blog and in general in the guestbook.  The blog will serve to keep her clients informed of new exhibitions, new works and new changes to the site.

Results

Analysis of visitor data before and after the new website showed daily visitor increased by three times, but more importantly each visitor stayed about 6 times longer than before.  General comments from visitors mentioned they could better appreciate her work in the new format.  By adding the url of the website to her personal email signature the client was able to add to the increase of visitors to her site.

When the client exhibits her work she also presents the website on a PC.  Using the site in this manner allows her to "expand" the exhibition without taking up more room in the exhibition gallery or increase costs.  It also allows visitors that like her exhibited work to conveniently familiarize themselves with more of her body of work.  The site itself serves as a virtual gallery; visitors from places as different as Hong Kong and Zurich have visited the site.
